“Don’t let your hearts be troubled or afraid.”
But why? How come? What if?
These are all-too-common questions ingrained in our human nature – especially in the young. It is an innate human quality to search for meaning and to make sense of the world in which we live. But how do we find comfort in a world of trouble, despair and confusion?
When Jesus spoke with his disciples nearing the end of his earthly ministry, of course they were troubled. They were walking the same streets and dealing with the same challenges as he was – they were his devoted followers and supporters. Why would they not be concerned? Consider the challenges we face in our own lives today – we dwell on small things and larger issues around us all the time. We can relate to feeling unsettled or worried. This passage in John’s Gospel helps us to recall and remember the importance of holding the saviour’s words close to our hearts.
The reassuring words from Jesus, encouraging us to not let our hearts be troubled or afraid, is a comforting reminder that all he said and did is for us! When we pay close attention to his words, guided by his actions and example, we keep these words close to our hearts, helping us to remember him always – this is the gift of peace he shares with us.
The gift of peace truly comes from keeping the words of Jesus – the words of the Father – close to our hearts, remembering to pray and act with love.
We must strive to always remember the words and examples of the gospels, so we can truly rejoice in the love of the Lord, who’s gift of peace comes without burden or expectation.
