Gospel: Luke 14:25-33

Being a living example of the love we have for each other is to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. He has shown us the way and encourages us to always put him first, let Him lead. The readings for today can seem very demanding of our time and actions. The challenge put to us is when we are asked to put Jesus first in all that we do. This might create problems with people who do not believe what we believe, especially family members and close friends. However, we must remember to respect those around us even if we do not necessarily agree with them or them with us.

Pope Benedict XVI (September, 2007) states that the instructions in the Gospel today are written especially for the chosen Twelve as their role in spreading the Good News was demanding and required fortitude, faith and a determined attitude to put nothing in the way of Jesus. Over the centuries we have many strong men and women of the Church who have guided and led the way, who have made the teachings of Jesus more readily accessible to us.

As we listen to the readings today let us remember that we face many challenges – big and small - as we live our lives, but if we make Christ our centre we will always have someone close to us. Living a life of love helps us answer the challenge to be people of Christ.
