Bishops Welcome Minimum Wage Increase

The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference has welcomed the Fair Work Commission's decision to increase the national minimum wage by 6% (to $26.44 per hour) and modern award rates by 4.75% from 1 July. Bishop Columba Macbeth-Green noted the rise offers real relief to low-paid workers facing high living costs, affirming the Church's long-standing belief that work must uphold human dignity.

Second Chapter : Foundations and Principles of the
Social Doctrine of the Church

Pope Leo XIV has released his highly anticipated first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas ("Magnificent Humanity"). In it, the Holy Father reflects on how we can protect human dignity, relationships, and the value of human work as Artificial Intelligence transforms our world.

The second chapter of the Encyclical focuses on the cornerstones of the Social Doctrine of the Church (SDC),  presenting them as a "living wisdom" necessary to guide humanity in the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and of major technological transformations. The human person is the foundation of everything. The human being is never an object or a data point, but a subject with dignity, whom technology is called to serve and not replace.

Questions for reflection:

  • What determines the value of people?
  • Do my daily choices seek the common good or only my own interests?
  • Does my daily use of technology (social media, apps, AI tools) serve to improve my
relationships and include others, or is it becoming a form of isolation that only fuels
    my own private interests?

Trinity Families Appeal – 2026

Trinity Families has been a beacon of hope in our region, providing over $2 million in funding to charities that support families facing hardship. Programs funded include bushfire relief, family counselling, suicide prevention, emergency accommodation, and parenting support.

Bishop Greg urges everyone to support this year’s Trinity Families Appeal, emphasizing that this is our own charitable trust—locally based and dedicated to addressing the unique needs of families in Greater Gippsland. We are called to give generously so that families in need can access vital welfare services. Donation envelopes are available in the church for those requiring receipts for taxation purposes. Let us help spread hope in our community. Please give generously.
