What a joy it was to celebrate the 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, Narre Warren.
The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Greg Bennet and concelebrated by the clergy from our diocese. Our celebration brought together diverse cultures, languages, and backgrounds under this year’s theme, "Even just one of these children". From the entrance procession with national flags to the Gospel and recessional processions led by the Samoan community in vibrant song and dance, the liturgy was a living testament that we are truly one family in Christ. The Prayers of the Faithful highlighted the richness of our diocesan community, offered in various languages representing our Indian, Sri Lankan, Mauritian, African, Timorese, and Filipino brothers and sisters.
A deeply moving moment came when Bishop Greg reflected on the courage of migrants by sharing the story of Fr Tran, who left his homeland by boat facing an uncertain future. In a spontaneous moment of solidarity, Bishop Greg began singing "I am, you are, we are Australian", and the entire community joined in unison, filling the church with one voice and common hope.
Following the celebration of the Eucharist, the festivities continued in the school hall. Everyone came together to share an incredible spread of multicultural dishes, enjoy energetic cultural dance performances, and share in the joy as Bishop Greg did the honours of cutting the cake.
A heartfelt thank you to Fr Michael Williemsen (PP), Fr Prabhu Antony IVDei (AP), the parish staff, the volunteers, the choir, cultural dance groups, and the OLHC parish community who prepared food and helped make this day so memorable.
