December 10th saw the annual blessing of the icons ‘written’ by members of the Saint Michael’s Icon Writing Group based at St Michael’s church in Traralgon.
This small diverse and ecumenical group meet every second and fourth Wednesday of the month to produce what are, in fact, visual statements of faith… ‘using things of earth to create things of heaven’ as their gathering prayer declares.
Most of the group have no formal training or particular artistic skill… we learn from each other and share our setbacks and progress. If you are drawn to this special expression of your spirituality you are most welcome to come and see the group at work and give it a go yourself… you will be surprised at how fulfilling the act of creating your own icon can be.
