World Day of the Sick

‘The compassion of the Samaritan: loving by bearing another’s pain’.

The World Day of the Sick was initiated by St John Paul in 1992. It offers an invitation to pray for the sick, the suffering and those who accompany them.

In his message for the 2026 World Day of the Sick, Pope Leo reflects on the gospel of the Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37): ‘The compassion of the Samaritan: loving by bearing another’s pain’.

On this World Day of the Sick, let us hold in prayer those amongst us who are sick and suffering:

  • May their vulnerability be met with compassion
  • May their loneliness be met with companionship
  • May their suffering be eased
  • May they find comfort in the knowledge that God is with them.

Let us pray for those who care for the sick:

  • May they be strengthened in their kindness
  • May they be encouraged in their weariness
  • May they be inspired by the story of the Samaritan.

And may the God who heals all ills, bless us all.
Amen.
