The Diocese of Sale recently hosted a Parish Safeguarding Officers’ Development Day, bringing together volunteers from across the Diocese to strengthen safeguarding practices and promote a culture of care and protection in parish communities.

The day explored practical aspects of the Parish Safeguarding Officer role, including how safeguarding is structured and lived out across roles in the parish, reporting pathways, Code of Conduct, compliance items, professional and confidential boundaries, and safeguarding responsibilities. Equally important was the opportunity to reflect on the deeper purpose of safeguarding within the life and mission of the Church.

The formation session, Developing a Spirituality and Culture of Safeguarding, explored safeguarding as an integral expression of the Church’s mission and commitment to human dignity. Participants reflected on safeguarding as a shared responsibility, grounded in the Gospel and expressed through care, accountability, compassion, and vigilance. The session considered both the theological foundations and practical actions needed to embed safeguarding into parish life, recognising the important role of Parish Safeguarding Officers in fostering safe, respectful, and trustworthy communities.
A highlight of the day was the commitment demonstrated by Parish Safeguarding Officers to creating parish communities where people feel safe, respected, welcomed, and heard. Their willingness to share experiences, learn from one another, and continue strengthening safeguarding practices reflects the important ministry they undertake.
Safeguarding is a shared responsibility. It is expressed not only through policies and compliance requirements, but through the everyday actions that foster care, accountability, compassion, and trust.
