In August of last year, Joan, our RCIA Co-Ordinator, invited me to become a sponsor for a woman who was on her journey towards becoming a Catholic. Without hesitation, I felt the Lord calling me to accept this role. As John said, "My sheep hear my voice, I know them, and they follow me.”

At the time, I was participating in the Alpha program and was seeking a way to deepen my faith and find a greater sense of belonging and purpose in the parish. Joan’s invitation provided me with the opportunity to do just that while walking along side my catechumen, Lisa.

When I first met Lisa and her two young adult children, they were already in the initial stages of inquiry. Lisa expressed her gratitude for me taking on the role of her sponsor, and I thanked her for allowing me to walk alongside her on this journey.

It was surprising to see the number of candidates and catechumens on that first night, and as time went on our group expanded with more sponsors and individuals discerning their Catholic faith. Witnessing their growing faith each week was truly beautiful, and the presence of the Holy Spirit was palpable among us.

As a sponsor, I attended the Wednesday night sessions with Lisa and her family, where we listened to various talks and discussed the weekly gospel readings. Lisa posed many questions challenging me at times, but together we shared and nurtured our faith.

Being a sponsor has provided me with incredible experiences, such as participating in the Rite of Election at Sale Cathedral and supporting the candidate’s as they received the sacrament of reconciliation for the first time. Seeing the group's faith strengthen week by week fills me with hope for the future of our church.

I highly recommend being a sponsor if given the opportunity. Embracing this invitation has enriched me in ways I never expected, and I eagerly anticipate celebrating the sacraments with Lisa and the others at Easter.
