Dear brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ, Today’s Gospel presents three beautiful parables: the hidden treasure, the pearl of great price, and the fishing net. Jesus asks us a simple but challenging question: “What is the greatest treasure in our life?”
A few weeks ago, many people around the world watched heartbreaking news reports of devastating floods that swept through communities. Families lost homes within hours. Cars, furniture, savings, and treasured possessions disappeared in the rushing water. Many people stood in tears, holding only the clothes they were wearing.
Yet something remarkable happened. Volunteers, neighbours, churches, and strangers came together. They shared food, clothing, shelter, and comfort. Many survivors later said, “We lost our possessions, but we discovered the goodness of people and the presence of God.”
That tragedy reminds us of an important truth: everything material can disappear in a moment, but faith, hope, love, and our relationship with Christ remain forever.
Today we live in a world that constantly tells us that happiness comes from having more—a bigger house, a newer phone, a better salary, more followers on social media, or greater success. But despite all these things, anxiety, loneliness, depression, and broken relationships continue to increase. We are more connected digitally than ever before, yet many people feel deeply isolated. Jesus offers another way. He says that true happiness is found in the Kingdom of God—in knowing Him, loving Him, and serving others.
The treasure Jesus speaks about is not hidden because God wants to keep it from us. It is hidden because many people are looking in the wrong places. The final parable about the fishing net reminds us that one day each of us will stand before God. Our lives are not measured by our bank accounts, our titles, or our achievements. God will ask: Did you love? Did you forgive? Did you care for the poor? Did you remain faithful? Did you make Christ the treasure of your life? These are the things that last forever.
As a priest, I have visited people in hospitals and at the end of their lives. I have never heard anyone say, “I wish I had earned more money” or “I wish I had bought another car.” Instead, they speak about family, forgiveness, love, faith, and God. They want to receive the Eucharist. They ask for prayers. They long for peace with Christ. At the end of life, we finally see what the greatest treasure has always been.
May we discover again that Jesus is the hidden treasure worth every sacrifice, the pearl beyond all price, and the Lord who invites us into His Kingdom. Let us have a joyful heart, willing to place Christ first in our families, our work, our parish, and our daily lives. For when Jesus becomes our greatest treasure, we discover a joy that no hardship, no disaster, and no passing success can ever take away.
The man who found the treasure sold everything with joy. The merchant who found the pearl did the same. Why? Because they realized that what they had found was worth far more than what they were leaving behind. The Kingdom of God is like that. Once we truly experience God’s love, nothing else can compare.
So, today Jesus asks us a simple but challenging question: “What is the greatest treasure in our life?”
