Today we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, a moment that marks the beginning of Jesus' public ministry and the end of the Christmas season. At first glance, it might seem strange — why would the sinless Son of God need baptism? Even John was surprised to see Jesus wanting to be baptised by him.
But Jesus doesn’t enter the waters of the Jordan for His sake — He enters for ours. In allowing Himself to be baptized by John, Jesus steps into our humanity. He humbles Himself, standing with sinners, identifying with the broken, and showing us the way to new life.
As He rises from the water, the heavens open, and the Father declares:
"You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."
And the Holy Spirit descends like a dove — a powerful sign of the Holy Trinity and the beginning of a mission rooted in love.
For us, this feast is a reminder of our own baptism — the moment we were claimed by God, made part of His family, and filled with grace. It’s not just a past event — it’s a lifelong calling to live as children of God.
Do we remember that we are God’s beloved? Do we live in a way that pleases Him?
Week after week, we proclaim: I believe in God… in Christ who died… in the Holy Spirit… in one Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, and life everlasting.
And yes — we do believe. We forget that saying “yes” to a creed means little unless we also say “yes” to Jesus with our lives. Without that living response, belief becomes hollow — a form without the heart.
As we begin this new year, the Baptism of the Lord invites us to renew our identity and mission:
May we hear the Father’s voice speaking to us too:
"You are my beloved. I am pleased with you."
And may we live out our baptism each day with courage and faith.
