Shine a Light: Loving Our Neighbour

When Jesus is asked which commandment is the greatest, His answer is beautifully simple: to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbour as ourselves. At times, faith can seem complicated, but Jesus brings us back to what matters most: love. After all, God is love, and every act of genuine love reflects His presence in our lives.

As we journey through this Franciscan Year, these words invite us to pause and reflect on how love is lived out in our everyday lives. Love is present in the patience we show a family member, the forgiveness we offer when we have been hurt, the encouragement we give to someone who is struggling, or the time we take to truly listen. These moments may seem small, but they often have the greatest impact, bringing comfort, hope, and healing to others.

The readings remind us that God has a special concern for those who are vulnerable, isolated, or in need. They challenge us to look beyond ourselves and see others through eyes of compassion. In a world that can sometimes feel hurried and divided, we are called to make others feel seen, valued, and cared for.

St Francis understood this deeply. He recognised the dignity of every person and responded with humility, kindness, and joy. His example reminds us that love is not simply a feeling but a choice we make each day through our words and actions.  May we take time this week to reflect on the ways we show love to those around us. Through even the smallest acts of kindness, we can make God's love visible in our homes, parish, and the wider community. When we choose love, we bring the Gospel to life, for God is Love.
